Manuscript of the Mishneh Torah, Book of Separation (Sefer hafla'ah) by Moses ben Maimon (Maimonides), Yemen, 1498, Ink on paper, Fisher Friedberg MSS 5-021

Description

The Mishneh Torah (not to be confused with the early medieval Mishnah that appears earlier in the exhibition) was composed by the philosopher and physician Maimonides (1138-1204). Born in Cordoba, Spain, Maimonides wrote his major works in Morocco and Egypt, and his commentary on religious law in the Mishneh Torah has influenced Jewish communities from Spain to Yemen and beyond. The book's owner has noted the births of two of his children on the first leaf along with a blessing, showing how a scholarly book can also contain tender personal family histories.
